Green Pools

Taking a daily dip in your backyard pool is the dream for many Floridians. Whether it be to cool off after a long summer day, to get a few laps in for a low impact workout or to let the kids burn off some of that never ending energy, there is always a good reason to jump in the pool. That is, until there isn’t. Many a pool owner know that dreaded feeling when you walk outside and instead of looking at the crisp, clear water you are staring into a murky green bowl of disgust. You may find yourself frustrated and panicked as your once relaxing afternoon has turned into an urgent call to your local pool company. As you are waiting for your green pool to be clean again let’s learn a bit more about why your pool turned green in the first place and how The Daily Dip Pools can prevent it from happening again.

Keeping a crisp and inviting pool all begins with the water chemistry. We won’t drag you back to high school science classes but, it is important to be aware of your pools chemistry level and maintain a proper level of chlorine and pH. These levels can change quickly, especially in the Florida heat, so it is not uncommon for a slight build up in algae to turn your pool green overnight. Another common factor that will affect the clarity of your pool includes proper filtration and cleaning of your filter. Is the cartridge filter being cleaned on a regular basis? If you have a DE or a Sand filter, are they being backwashed properly?

Now that you realize you have a green pool on your hands and you have learned how it got that way, what can we do to remedy the situation? This is an excellent, and most frequently asked question. For many homeowners their first instinct is to contact their local pool service, and we agree that hiring a professional to rebalance and reinstate your pool is always best.

Here at The Daily Dip Pools, we offer professional green pool cleaning and the solution is based on the severity of the algae build up. For pools that are just slightly off and need to get clean before the problem develops, a shock of the pool and proper circulation, followed by careful monitoring of the chemistry levels, will often be enough to get you back in the pool. However, if the pool is deeply green, or has been green for sometime it may call for a chemical cleaning and balancing. This is a several step process that spans over a few weeks to ensure that all of the fungi and algae has been removed and the pool can once again maintain proper chemistry. At times, the worst green pool offenders, will need to be treated with an acid wash. This process involves draining the pool and using an acid-based product to pressure treat the pools plaster surface, therefore removing the algae. **Friendly reminder to never drain the pool on your own. Pressure forming underneath the pool can cause the pool frame to “pop up” and create an even bigger disaster for you**
